New Film by Iranian-American Director
May 30th, 2009
I can’t imagine how satisfying it must be for a film director to hit that Eureka! moment with his story-line, cast, location, and sense of timing. Ramin Bahrani’s “Goodbye Solo” does just that. His is a simple little story about two very different men — one cheerful young immigrant and an old American who is visibly bitter about life — who cross paths over a couple of weeks in Winston-Salem, NC. Its premise and rhythm really reminded me of a beautiful classic of Iranian cinema, Abbas Kiarostami’s “Taste of Cherry”. I won’t say more, other than that “Goodbye Solo” is the best new narrative film I’ve seen in a long time.
