pg-22-suu-kyi-afp-ge_48545tToday marks the 5,000th day of captivity for Burmese human rights leader and Nobel Peace Prize winner, Aung San Suu Kyi. She has been transferred to a “guesthouse” in Rangoon’s Insein jail, after she was accused of violating the terms of her house arrest when an American man swam across the lake and spent some time at her place. The Independent UK takes a look at the 19 years she’s spent in captivity; the great influence she continues to have over the Burmese people; and the failed attempts by U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon to negotiate her release — and that of more than 2,000 other political prisoners — with the Burmese junta.
